We are excited to bring back the JMSA Kids Life Sc

We are excited to bring back the JMSA Kids Life Science Forum on 4/28 (Sun)!

We are currently looking for JMSA medical students and residents who are in NYC to help run a cardiovascular booth, teaching how to take blood pressure and pulses and do a demonstration booth about what happens to the heart with exercise. Please DM or send an email to efujino@jmsa.org if you are interested in volunteering!

JMSA hosts a successful wine and cheese party!

On 3/1/24, JMSA hosted a wine and cheese party at the Apple Ophthalmology office of Dr. Kichiemon Asoma and Dr. Naomi Hayashi, JMSA board members. The event was successful with over 50 people attending. Attendees included board members, members, students, and those interested in learning more about JMSA. Over wine and cheese, the gathering was informal and friendly.
During the evening, Ms. Riki Ito, a leader of the NY Japanese American Lions Club and Vice President of JAA, talked to the group about her recent trip to the region that was hit hard by the Noto Earthquake and JMSA encouraged attendees to consider donating to the NY Japanese American Lions Club Noto Earthquake disaster fund. We were very honored that Dr. Jitsuhiro Yamada, Lions Clubs International Foundation Chairperson and past International President, attended our reception with Ms. Riki Ito and JMSA member and NY JAL member Dr. Mari Morimoto. Dr. Miho Urisaka, A JMSA member, generously donated multiple 1/2 dozen packs of fresh organic eggs from her family farm, Cucumber Hill Farm in Putnam Valley, NY. The attendees really enjoyed connecting with each other, learning more about JMSA mission and programs in an informal, welcoming atmosphere. JMSA hopes to have another wine and cheese in the fall. Special thanks to our social chairperson, Ms. Lydia Horiguchi for putting together a delicious cheese platter and to Dr. Kichiemon Asoma, Dr. Naomi Hayashi and Dr. Teru Hayashi and staff for graciously allowing us to have the reception at their beautiful office on W. 38th street.

JMSA Board Member DR. Alex Ky-Miyasaka becomes the

JMSA Board Member DR. Alex Ky-Miyasaka becomes the new President of the Chinese American Medical Society (CAMS).

Chinese American Medical Society (CAMS) and Coalition of Asian-American IPA (CAIPA) had its Red Lantern Gala on November 4th, 2023, at Pier 60 Chelsea Piers in New York City to celebrate the momentous occasion of CAMS' 60th Anniversary.

Our own Dr. Alex Ky-Miyasaka , a JMSA Board Member and a Professor of Surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital, became the new President of CAMS.

This annual gala plays a pivotal role in advancing its mission to enhance the health status of Chinese Americans and to champion healthcare excellence for all by mobilizing healthcare professionals. Dr. Ky-Miyasaka is the Medical Director of the Mount Sinai Chinatown Practice and provides expert care to the community.

JMSA President Dr. Maki Kano-Lueckerath, Immediate Past President Dr. Robert Yanagisawa, Executive Secretary Mr. Yoshio Kano, and JMSA Board Members and friends- Dr. Kichiemon Asoma, Ms. Lydia Horiguchi, Dr. Makoto Iwahara and Mrs. Michiko Iwahara, Dr. Yumiko Kanei, Dr. John Fox, and Susan Onuma, ESQ attended this wonderful event.

JMSA was very happy to support Dr. Ky-Miyasaka and CAMS on their 60th Anniversary. CAMS- CAIPA generously supported the JMSA 51st Annual Dinner on 9/16/23 as a Gold Annual Dinner Benefactor.

We sincerely look forward to collaborating with CAMS-CAIPA as we support the health and welfare of the Asian and Asian-American communities.

The Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) seeks to support Japanese community programs that provide medical, psychological, and social support through grants given through the JMSA Community Outreach Program (JCOP).

Organizations that provide medical, psychological and/or social support which contributes significantly to the mental well-being and health of the Japanese community are encouraged to apply for a grant. The organization must be an NPO (nonprofit organization) to qualify for a JCOP grant.

Deadline for applications: Tuesday, October 31, 2023

Thank you very much to all that attended Dr. Lee’s presentation “Navigating the U.S. Residency System as an International Medical Graduate”. Dr. Lee covered a variety of topics regarding the U.S. residency application such as match statistics, sub-internships, what programs are looking for, personal statements, interview advice, recommendation letters, and more! This was followed by the group of panelists that answered questions many international medical graduates had.

Mayor Adams' Asian American & Pacific Islander Her

Mayor Adams' Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Reception 2023:
Maki Kano Lydia Horiguchi Mio Sawai and Mari Morimoto attended the reception on 5/23/23. Over 600 guests attended but we were one of a few people to represent the Japanese community.

JMSA had a great turnout at the Japan Parade 2023

JMSA had a great turnout at the Japan Parade 2023 on 5/13/23. It was the first time to participate. We had almost 40 marchers comprised of JMSA Board members, members, family, friends, and office staff. Everyone had a great time and we were proud to represent JMSA as we marched down Central Park West on a beautiful Saturday. Dr. Makoto Iwahara, a past president, took the prize for having the most family members there and Dr. Kichiemon Asoma, a JMSA board member, took the prize for having the most staff members from his office participate.

We held signs that described JMSA’s programs such as mentoring and health care education. We wore matching t-shirts that were designed by Mari Iwahara. We gave away 80 toy stethoscopes to spectators and wore silly sunglasses.

Many marchers were already discussing plans for the 2024 parade such as ways to have more interaction with the spectators. Board member Dr. Naomi Hayashi’s daughter Kimberly Wei stole the show as Rilakkumma.

The Japan parade was a great opportunity to spread the word about JMSA to the community and it was a great way to bring JMSA members and their families together!

Nippon Club and JMSA co-sponsored lecture series is hosting the second webinar on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, 7 pm-8 pm EST.

Dr. Saito is a pediatric psychiatrist and a director of the inpatient service at the Department of Psychiatry in the Zucker Hillside Hospital. She had given us an ADHD topic lecture last time and it was very popular. This is her second time volunteering with another interesting, highly demanding topic!

We proudly announce another JMSA international online event led by Dr. Charlotte Lee, a current cardiology fellow at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The event will be hosted on June 4th 9 AM-11 AM JST (June 3rd 8 PM-10 PM EDT). This event aims to accomplish the following three objectives:

1. To provide friendly tips on the US residency application and interview process

2. To provide an overview on the US residency experience

3. Q&A panel from previous trainees including IMGs

The information will be helpful for US domestic applicants as well!
