On November 21, 2022, Dr. Akira Nishisaki gave a joint online health webinar co-sponsored by JMSA and the Nippon Club on the Pediatric ICU and saving children’s lives in an ICU setting.

Dr. Akira Nishisaki is one of the JMSA Vice Presidents and an attending in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). On November 21, 2022, he gave a very informative talk about the Pediatric ICU. He first explained the concept of the pediatric ICU or PICU. The PICU is the distinct place where a critically ill or injured child can receive comprehensive high-quality care. One-third of children admitted to the PICU at CHOP are in need of respiratory support due to the current spread of illnesses such as RSV and influenza. Despite people’s fears, more than 95% of patients who are admitted to the PICU are eventually discharged as they recover from their acute illnesses.

He then spoke about the Japanese PICU and stated that there are only approximately 30 PICUs in Japan. PICU specialists or intensivists are limited in Japan and often general pediatricians provide care for critically ill children. He hopes that there will be an increase in physicians who are trained in ICU care and better regionalization with safe pediatric medical transfer systems in Japan. Dr. Nishisaki is a leader in simulation exercises that allow teams of medical students and doctors in Japan to connect with ICU doctors in the US to learn about critical pediatric ICU scenarios and how to act and what to do to best treat the patients. He ended the talk by emphasizing that people in the community to help decrease PICU admissions by following simple preventative measures such as child safety in the house (such as making sure children won’t get a hold of small batteries that they can eventually swallow), wearing seat belts and using helmets and to follow routine immunization guidelines such as getting the influenza vaccine or getting the covid vaccines as recommended to prevent serious disease.

Congratulations to Hiroshi Otake for receiving the 2022 Nippon Life-JMSA Scholarship!

Mr. Otake is a Japanese board-certified physician in Anesthesiology and Critical Care medicine. He also completed Master of Science in Clinical Informatics Management at Stanford School of Medicine.

Mr. Otake's JMSA project is to develop new care delivery models to improve clinical outcomes by analyzing clinical databases with machine learning.

Mr. Uni is a post-doctoral fellow in a molecular pharmacology program and a board-certified hemato-oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Mr. Uni's JMSA project is to organize workshops to share accurate knowledge about cancer and its prevention for Japanese residents in the U.S.

Congratulations to Atsumi Kimura for receiving the 2022 Mitsui USA-JMSA Scholarship!

Ms. Kimura is a 4th-year medical student at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in NY.

Ms. Kimura’s JMSA project is to promote conversations about mental health and wellness amongst Japanese and Japanese Americans, especially in the setting of increased anti-Asian hate crimes. She plans on creating a virtual platform where individuals can share their experiences and learn about resources and support services. Ultimately, she hopes to help decrease mental health stigma in Japanese communities.

JMSA’s executive secretary Mr. Yoshio Kano is honored at the JASSI 41st Anniversary Benefit Dinner

On Thursday October 27, 2022, JMSA supported the Japanese American Social Services, Inc. (JASSI) dinner that was held at the New York Athletic Club as a Silver Benefit Dinner Sponsor.

Ms. Eiko Kano, a violinist accompanied by Karen Hakoyan gave a very special performance. Ms. Ryoko Mochizuki, the JASSI Board President gave the welcome address followed by the Ambassador Mikio Mori who gave his greetings. The Friend of JASSI Award was presented to the Asian American Federation and we were all very proud of our own Mr. Yoshio Kano, JMSA’s Executive Secretary who was honored with the Community Leadership Award for his commitment to supporting the Japanese Community over the years.

JMSA attendees had a very enjoyable evening supporting JASSI. Congratulations to JASSI on a very successful benefit dinner!

Congratulations to Reona Kimura for receiving the 2022 Mitsui USA-JMSA Scholarship!

Ms. Kimura is a 4th-year medical student at the Stony Brook School of Medicine in NY. She was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and came to the U.S. to complete her undergraduate studies in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.

Ms. Kimura’s JMSA project will focus on increasing hypertension management awareness among the Japanese-American population. She hopes to create educational materials about lifestyle modifications and management for hypertension and host free blood pressure screenings for the community.

Congratulations to Hirotaka Miyashita, MD for receiving the 2022 Mitsui USA-JMSA Scholarship!

Dr. Miyashita is currently a PGY-4 in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Dartmouth Cancer Center.

Dr. Miyashita’s JMSA project involves two other fellows, Dr. Hayato Mitaka (PGY-5 in Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington) and Dr. Yu Shindo (PGY-4 in Geriatrics and Palliative Care at the Mount Sinai Hospital). Their goal is to share their experiences as hematology/oncology, infectious disease, and geriatrics/palliative care fellows through a blog as these three subspecialties of internal medicine are better established in the United States compared to Japan. They hope the detailed descriptions of these subspecialty training in the US could provide some useful insight to the trainers and trainees of these fields in Japan. Congratulations to Shiori Ucheya for receiving the 2022 Nishioka-JMSA Scholarship!

Ms. Ucheya is a 4th-year medical student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (GA Campus).

The goal of Ms. Ucheya's project is to mentor Japanese/Japanese-American students interested in medicine. As a first-generation college graduate and the first member to be a physician in her family, she hopes to break the common mental barrier to pursuing medicine and provide guidance for their journey.
