The Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) cordially invites you to attend our 48th Annual Spring Dinner Celebration.
We are extremely excited to have Ms. Miray Ito, a 17 year old Japanese-American violinist perform for us at the dinner.
We will be presenting the 2020 JMSA Scholarship recipients as well as thanking our generous donors that make our programs possible.
There will be a silent auction to raise funds for the JMSA General Fund.
We hope to see you there!

On June 1, JMSA hosted the NY Life Science Forum at the University of Tokyo New York Office, co-sponsored by Arclev, Inc. and the Arclev Academia Strategists Network. The Forum highlights the Japanese life science researchers based in the U.S. and continues to serve as a valuable platform for fostering connections within the Japanese scientific community.

This year’s event was organized by Dr. Ayako Kawatake-Kuno (Neuroscience PhD candidate at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai), Dr. Sei Higuchi (JMSA Board Member), Dr. Keiichi Ito (JMSA Member), and Ms. Nina Harano (Neuroscience PhD candidate at NYU and JMSA student member).

The 2025 Forum centered on the theme of “diverse career development grounded in life science research,” and featured successful Japanese researchers who have pursued a variety of professional paths. Invited speakers included Dr. Shingo Kajimura (Professor at Harvard University), Dr. Hiroshi Yano (Postdoctoral Fellow at Weill Cornell Medicine), and Dr. Mai Takahashi (Instructor in Clinical Investigation at Rockefeller University). In addition, Dr. Yuki Haba (Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University), recipient of this year’s NY Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Scholarship, was invited to present. Attendees enjoyed learning about each speaker’s unique journey and scientific contributions.

Following the talks, participants gathered for a social session over drinks and sushi, catered by Sushi Tsushima, which also featured a live nigiri sushi demonstration by sushi chefs. Thanks to the efforts and collaboration of everyone involved, the event was a great success. We look forward to continuing the NY Life Science Forum in the years to come.

On March 25th, 2025, in celebration of International Women’s Month, the Consulate and the Japanese Medical Society of America (JMSA) co-hosted an impactful Women in STEMM panel discussion, with opening remarks by Ambassador Mikio Mori. The event highlighted the pressing need to advance gender equity in science and technology fields across both the United States and Japan.

The panel featured distinguished speakers Dr. Angeliki Diane Rigos (Epistimi/MIT) and Dr. Saori Watanabe (Eisai), who candidly shared their personal journeys and insights on navigating systemic challenges such as salary disparities, the glass ceiling, and balancing career and family. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Maki Kano-Lueckerath, President of JMSA, who emphasized the critical importance of familial and institutional support in empowering women in STEMM. Serving as emcee for the evening was Ms. Haruka Kokaze of Columbia University and One Mind, who is also the 2024 recipient of the Mitsui USA Foundation Scholarship.

Key topics included cultural and structural differences in gender expectations across countries, the role of mentorship, networking, and leadership training, and how academic institutions, corporations, and governments can work together to create inclusive and supportive environments. The evening concluded with a lively Q&A session, a networking reception, and a shared commitment to deepening U.S.–Japan collaboration in empowering women to thrive in STEMM careers.

On March 12, 2025, Haruka Kokaze, Workplace Mental

On March 12, 2025, Haruka Kokaze, Workplace Mental Health Research Associate and Lead Japan Strategy Analyst at Columbia University’s Mental Health + Work Design Lab and One Mind, and recipient of the 2024 Mitsui USA Foundation-JMSA Scholarship, organized and led a webinar titled “Mental Health Matters: The Corporate Role in Supporting Japanese Expatriates and Their Families.” Hosted as part of the Nippon Club and JMSA Health Series, the event shed
light on the complex and often overlooked mental health challenges faced by Japanese
expatriates and their families living in the United States.

Ms. Kokaze and Dr. Kathy Pike, Director of Columbia University’s Mental Health + Work Design Lab and CEO of One Mind, presented research and data illustrating how cultural adjustment stress, language barriers, social isolation, and limited access to culturally competent mental health care can significantly impact the well-being of expatriates, their spouses, and children. These challenges not only affect personal and family life but also contribute to reduced job
performance, lower employee engagement, and premature repatriation. Currently, only 6
percent of Japanese employees report feeling engaged at work, a figure far below the global
average. By combining academic insights, personal narratives, and practical strategies, the webinar equipped Japanese subsidiaries in the United States with evidence-based tools for creating more supportive and resilient workplaces.

Developed under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Yanagisawa and in collaboration with Dr. Pike,
the program wove together personal stories and professional expertise. Dr. Yanagisawa spoke
about his experience growing up in a Japanese expatriate family in the United States. Dr. Pike
shared reflections from her time living in Japan as an American expatriate. Ms. Kokaze offered
her perspective as the daughter of Japanese expatriates who lived across New York, Houston,
and London, highlighting the deep emotional and cultural complexity faced by many expatriate
families.

The Japanese Medical Society of America, (JMSA) hosted the Kids Life Science forum on Sunday April 28th with the support of the JAA NY. The event was a part of the JAA Sakura Health Fair and took place at the JAA Hall on W. 45th Street. Dr. Ayako Kawatake-Kuno, a PhD candidate in neuroscience at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai was the main organizer of the event with support from Dr. Sei Higuchi (JMSA Board Member), Dr. Keichii Ito (JMSA Member), and Ms. Nina Harano (the former main organizer of the event).

Dr. Maki Kano-Lueckerath, President of JMSA, delivered an opening speech, highlighting the mission of the Kids Life Science Forum: to spark children’s interest in STEM, medicine, and science through engaging and playful activities. The event hold two sessions, each attended by 15–20 children aged 5 to 10. Participant kids rotated through six interactive stations focused on medical and scientific topics, with activities led by physicians and life scientists. Five students from the Keio Academy of New York volunteered to support the event.

Children had the opportunity to practice surgical suturing, learn about the human heart and cardiovascular system using stethoscopes, explore how vocal cords produce sound, and understand the origin of sounds. Other stations introduced them to using microscopes to observe the veins in a leaf and making slime. Additionally, MIKIHOUSE had a booth where children could experience the size of a newborn baby and compare their foot sizes. They offered gifts, including a lunch box and bandanna, to the participating children.

The event provided early exposure to life science and medicine for children amongst the Japanese community, and I hope it continues in future years.

They will share insights on running a lab in the U.S., job hunting, and balancing clinical work with research.

This is a free event where school age children can rotate through STEMM stations and interact with healthcare professionals and students.

There is still some availability and its first come, first serve. The event will be held at JAA Hall and there will be morning and afternoon sessions.

JMSA hosted an enjoyable wine and cheese party at

JMSA hosted an enjoyable wine and cheese party at the office of Dr. Kichiemon Asoma and Dr. Naomi Hayashi on Friday March 14th.
The gathering brought together JMSA board members, JMSA members and friends. For some of the guests, it was their first JMSA event and a few of these guests expressed interest to join JMSA. The Italian cheese platters were lovingly prepared by the JMSA Social Chair and long time board member, Lydia Horiguchi and our Executive Secretary, Mr. Yoshio Kano welcomed the guests as they entered the event.

JMSA’s 2025 health initiative is mental health. At the wine and cheese, a goal was to raise funds to donate to the Hamilton Madison House-Japanese Clinic. The Japanese clinic provides vital mental healthcare for those with serious mental health issues. Aside from those with commercial insurance and medicare, the clinic provides care for Japanese and Japanese-American patients with medicaid as well those without insurance via sliding scale. JMSA was very fortunate that President Wynne Kim, Executive Director Isabel Ching, therapists Fumi Raith and Kumiko Takeshima Asiedu attended the event and talked about the mental health services that the Japanese Clinic provides for their clients.

We are continuing to raise funds for the Hamilton Madison House through the end of March so please donate!
Even a small amount will make a big difference for the Japanese Clinic.
