The evening was kicked off by the world-famous Senri Oe, who performed several of his new-style jazz pieces on the piano, combining Japanese pop tunes and New York Jazz.

Ms. Kaoriko Kuge, the evening’s MC, introduced JMSA President Maki Kano-Lueckerath, who gave her welcome remarks. The dinner marked the end of the first of Dr Kano’s successful two-year term and she spoke of the excitement she felt in seeing the initiative, enthusiasm, and commitment to service from the younger generation of JMSA members that have reinvigorated JMSA. Ambassador Mikio Mori of the Consul-General of Japan in New York next greeted the guests and gave thanks to JMSA’s commitment to supporting the Japanese and Japanese American community.

JMSA and its Board would like to thank the many donors, supporters, and benefactors. Without their support, none of JMSA’s programs would not be possible.

JMSA host its 2nd Benefactors Appreciation Evening JMSA host its 2nd Benefactors Appreciation Evening

On Friday, April 26th, JMSA hosted its 2nd Benefactors Appreciation Evening at the Yale Club in NYC. The evening brought together over 50 guests, comprised of Benefactors, JMSA members and Board and friends. The goal of the event was for JMSA to have the chance to express our sincere appreciation to the donors and to showcase JMSA’s programs which would not be possible without their support.

The evening also celebrated the 9 residents who came to shadow physicians during the one-week Tohoku Medical Resident Education Program. These residents came to NY from Iwate, Sendai and Miyagi-ken.
Ambassador Mikio Mori gave a heartwarming speech and commended JMSA for programs such as the JMSA scholarship program and the JMSA community outreach program or JCOP.
JMSA marches in the Japan Parade on Saturday May 1 JMSA marches in the Japan Parade on Saturday May 11, 2024

JMSA marched in the annual Japan Day Parade for the second year and it was a splendid day for JMSA! We were excited to have over 30 people participating, ranging from board members, members and their family and friends. We were fortunate to have a perfect parade day with blue skies. JMSA was one of over 90 groups that marched in the parade.

As we chanted “J-M-S-A,” we made our way down Central Park West from 81st street to 68th street.
The marchers wore JMSA t-shirts and red happis. We carried large signs describing our programs such as Scholarship, Global Health, Community Outreach and Mentoring. It was a wonderful way for JMSA to show support and solidarity with the Japanese Community in NY as well as to support efforts of the Consulate General of Japan in NY. The Japan Day Parade overall attracted many participant groups as well as spectators and it was a big success.

There were 2 sessions with 25 children ranging in age from 4 to 10. They rotated through 6 different science related and medically related stations and participated in hands on activities that were led by physicians, life scientists, and medical students. Children learned how to operate a laparoscope and learned about origin of sounds and the role of vocal cords in generating sounds. Other stations taught children how to use manipulate a microscope, make magnetic slime, learn about the heart and chromatography. Five students from the Keio Academy of NY participated as volunteers at the event. The kids life science forum promotes wellness and health related education amongst the Japanese community which is consistent with mission of JMSA.
