Below are the awardees of the JMSA scholarship 2019, along with their proposed scholarship projects.

Nishioka – JMSA Scholarship

  • Kristen Homma, Medical Student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
    • Project: To create a directory of Japanese healthcare providers for the DC science forum
  • Riku Moriguchi, Medical Student at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
    • Project: To serve as a bridge between JMSA and Japanese youth in NYC area
  • Mihoko Tanabe, Medical Student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
    • Project: To enhance global health awareness and health access in Philadelphia

Honjo – JMSA Scholarship

  • Rei Yamada, Medical Student at Thomas Jefferson University
    • Project: To investigate Japanese immigrant women’s experiences and needs for healthcare in the US
  • Sam Rashkovich, Medical Student at Weill Cornell Medical College          
    • To create a system to inform healthcare providers with care of Japanese-American patients
  • Shawn Tsutsui, Medical Student at University of Virginia
    • To build a website to help facilitate connections between student and faculty JMSA members

Mitsui USA – JMSA Scholarship

  • Dan Ebner, Medical Student at Brown University
    • To decentralize healthcare to underserved areas using technology such as AI and telemedicine
  • Nicholas Love, Medical Student at Stanford University
    • To increase cultural and linguistic exchange between the US and Japan using visual arts

Kuro Murase, MD – JMSA Scholarship

  • Akimasa Hayashi, MD Postdoctoral research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering
    • Project: To organize a panel discussion on liver transplantation at the JMSA Science Forum

Nippon Life – JMSA Scholarship

  • Cyrus Ghaznavi, Medical Student at Washington University
    • Project: To study fertility and sexual health in Japan at Tokyo University
  • Kaiho Yu, MD, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
    • Project: To improve the quality of databases in Japan with epidemiology techniques from the US

Raymond Sekiguchi MD – JMSA Scholarship

  • Maki Ishizuka, MD, Postdoctoral Fellow at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
    • Project: To expand the activities of the Japanese Association of Pediatrics in North America
  • Ichiro Watanabe, MD, Research fellow at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
    • Project: To improve the safety of pediatric airway management in Japan

Toyota-JMSA Scholarship

  • Ariel Daoud, Medical Student at University of Colorado
    • Project To study the experiences of bias by patients and providers of Japanese descent
  • Mika Tabata, Medical Student at Stanford Univeristy
    • To produce yoga videos in English and Japanese to promote healthy living
