Mayor Adams' Asian American & Pacific Islander Her Mayor Adams' Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Reception 2023:
Maki Kano Lydia Horiguchi Mio Sawai and Mari Morimoto attended the reception on 5/23/23. Over 600 guests attended but we were one of a few people to represent the Japanese community.
JMSA had a great turnout at the Japan Parade 2023 JMSA had a great turnout at the Japan Parade 2023 on 5/13/23. It was the first time to participate. We had almost 40 marchers comprised of JMSA Board members, members, family, friends, and office staff. Everyone had a great time and we were proud to represent JMSA as we marched down Central Park West on a beautiful Saturday. Dr. Makoto Iwahara, a past president, took the prize for having the most family members there and Dr. Kichiemon Asoma, a JMSA board member, took the prize for having the most staff members from his office participate.

We held signs that described JMSA’s programs such as mentoring and health care education. We wore matching t-shirts that were designed by Mari Iwahara. We gave away 80 toy stethoscopes to spectators and wore silly sunglasses.

Many marchers were already discussing plans for the 2024 parade such as ways to have more interaction with the spectators. Board member Dr. Naomi Hayashi’s daughter Kimberly Wei stole the show as Rilakkumma.

The Japan parade was a great opportunity to spread the word about JMSA to the community and it was a great way to bring JMSA members and their families together!

JMSA hosts its first Benefactor’s Appreciation R JMSA hosts its first Benefactor’s Appreciation Reception (Part 2)!

On Friday, March 3, 2023, JMSA hosted its first Benefactor’s Appreciation Reception at the Yale Club. The reception brought together the JMSA board members, members, generous donors, and some prospective donors. The standing dinner/cocktail-style reception made it conducive for the guests to have a chance to connect and network. The purpose of the reception was to thank the generous benefactors for their support of JMSA as well as to allow JMSA to update the donors and prospective donors about our current programs. JMSA President, Maki Kano welcomed the guests and noted that JMSA is very fortunate to have many donors who have supported JMSA’s programs over the years. She mentioned that JMSA sincerely hopes the donors can also help us to take an active part in spreading the word about JMSA and the excellent work that it does. The 10-minute video about JMSA’s history, present, and future was shown that summarized JMSA’s programs. The event, which was very well attended with over 50 guests, was a great success and JMSA hopes to make this donor appreciation reception an annual event.

________________________________
With the generous support from various faculty physicians and student leaders in both the United States and Japan, we were able to recruit roughly 50 medical students and physicians as participants on the day of the event! This event included a reflection about student doctors from both countries about their motivation towards medicine, a discussion about the US healthcare system, and breakout rooms where Japanese medical students could discuss with specialists about US-based clinical and research opportunities.

The event was a big hit thanks to all the participants as well as the special guest physicians and researchers (Dr. Kano, Dr. Machi, Dr. Sawai, Dr. Shirane, Dr. Higuchi)!

Below are some comments/reflections from event attendees and pictures of the event:

“I enjoyed the experience very much as it was a very welcoming and kind atmosphere.”

“It was a great opportunity to directly talk with doctors actually practicing medicine in the US. Also, it makes me really motivated to listen to the story of all med students who have great ambitions and make lots of efforts. Normally at Japanese universities, we don’t have many opportunities to ask questions directly to the doctors who practice medicine there, so it was such a fruitful time for me.”
