Great work to JMSA student representatives for hos Great work to JMSA student representatives for hosting the 2nd Online International Salon Event on March 11, 2023!
________________________________
With the generous support from various faculty physicians and student leaders in both the United States and Japan, we were able to recruit roughly 50 medical students and physicians as participants on the day of the event! This event included a reflection about student doctors from both countries about their motivation towards medicine, a discussion about the US healthcare system, and breakout rooms where Japanese medical students could discuss with specialists about US-based clinical and research opportunities.

The event was a big hit thanks to all the participants as well as the special guest physicians and researchers (Dr. Kano, Dr. Machi, Dr. Sawai, Dr. Shirane, Dr. Higuchi)!

Below are some comments/reflections from event attendees and pictures of the event:

“I enjoyed the experience very much as it was a very welcoming and kind atmosphere.”

“It was a great opportunity to directly talk with doctors actually practicing medicine in the US. Also, it makes me really motivated to listen to the story of all med students who have great ambitions and make lots of efforts. Normally at Japanese universities, we don’t have many opportunities to ask questions directly to the doctors who practice medicine there, so it was such a fruitful time for me.”

One of our JMSA student representatives, Abe Razza One of our JMSA student representatives, Abe Razzak from the Medical College of Wisconsin, with support from the Nishioka-JMSA Scholarly Foundation, had the opportunity to give educational outreach sessions to Japanese and Japanese American high schoolers. The outreach sessions were conducted at hoshuko-s (Japanese Saturday Schools), specifically the Asahi Japanese Saturday School https://www.asahigakuen.com/ ) in Los Angeles, CA and the Futabakai Japanese School in Chicago, IL (https://www.chicagohoshuko.com/) . The outreach sessions were focused on Japanese and Japanese American high school students as a means to ease transition to college and potential entrance to healthcare careers. The presentations focused on entry to medicine, choosing a career path, and college/early life exploration. As a first-generation college student, Abe has always been passionate about educational outreach; we at JMSA strive to lay a foundation for supporting educational outreach sessions as these! Congratulations and thank you to Abe, Nishioka Scholarly Foundation, and our community partners at Asahi and Futabakai for making this happen.

The following is the event content:

10:00 am (JT)/ 8:00 pm (ET):

Welcome by JMSA Leadership & Introduction (6 min)
Dr. Maki Kano, the President of JMSA, and Dr. Robert Yanagisawa, the JMSA Global Health Committee Chair, will greet and welcome the participants. This will be followed by a presentation about a day in the life of medical students in the US.

10:06 am (JT)/8:06pm (ET): Self-Reflection of Student Doctors (60 min)

Why do we learn medicine? Why did we choose to become a physician out of all of the healthcare professions? Six medical students from the US and Japan will share why they chose this profession as well as their career aspirations and thoughts on the future of healthcare delivery and medical education. While listening to the firsthand experiences of these medical students, we invite all participants to also reflect on how they plan to build resilience, promote change and diversity, and innovation in medicine.

11:06 am (JT)/9:06pm (ET): Faculty Panel in Breakout Rooms (45 min)

All participants will have the opportunity to meet and ask physicians practicing in the US about US-based medical care, the experience of moving to a new country (for Japanese International Medical Graduates), and specialty-specific topics. We plan to have breakout rooms for Med-Peds, Surgery, Psych, OBGYN, and Research. Participants will have the opportunity to join multiple rooms.

11:55 am (JT)/9:55pm (ET) Closing Remarks (5 min)

JMSA leadership and student representatives will introduce additional JMSA initiatives for medical students, including the Mentorship Program and the JAMSA medical English speaking practice sessions, as well as upcoming JMSA events before providing closing remarks.

I am Kazuki Wakiyama, a fifth-year medical student at Keio University School of Medicine. I finished my one-month rotation as a visiting student in cardiology at Harlem Hospital Center, one of the hospitals affiliated with Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

I have been studying English and for the USMLE for over a couple of years. Although I have always wanted to study abroad, I got anxious when the time had come. I noticed I did not have any connections with people in the U.S. because it was essentially my first trip to there. Under this circumstance, JMSA provided me with reassuring opportunities to talk with Dr. Yuichi Shimada, one of the board members of JMSA, and Mr. Yoshio Kano, executive secretary of JMSA, and a lot of Japanese doctors working in the U.S. At this time, I am honored to write about my experience.

JMSA hosts a holiday wine and cheese gathering 🍷🧀🎄

On Thursday 12/8/22, JMSA hosted a festive wine and cheese holiday gathering. Thanks to Dr. Yuzuru Anzai, the event was held at his office in midtown and attended by JMSA Board Members, members, prospective members and friends of JMSA. This was the first wine and cheese in several years since Dr. Anzai originated the JMSA wine and cheese gatherings during his Presidency from 2014 to 2018. Everyone who attended had a wonderful time connecting with each other.

Dr. Maki Kano-Lueckerath, the new President of JMSA, welcomed the guests and stated that JMSA hopes to hold such informal gatherings two to three times a year moving forward. These wine and cheese receptions provide an informal and enjoyable way for JMSA members to come together as well as a great forum for prospective members to learn more about JMSA.

A special thanks to Ms. Lydia Horiguchi, the JMSA Social Committee Chairperson and long time board member and to Ms. Marie Simonca, a friend of JMSA. Together they prepared a delicious cheese platter that was enjoyed by all and helped to organize the event. A big thanks Dr. Anzai for allowing us to hold the event at this office as well as to Dr. Mio Sawai, a new JMSA Board member. Dr. Sawai practices ob-gyn and works with Dr. Anzai in his practice and she helped to organize the event. Finally, a special thanks to Mr. Yoshio Kano, JMSA Executive Secretary, for his help to make the event a great success.

Thanks to all those who attended! We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and looking forward to connecting in the new year!

On November 21, 2022, Dr. Akira Nishisaki gave a j On November 21, 2022, Dr. Akira Nishisaki gave a joint online health webinar co-sponsored by JMSA and the Nippon Club on the Pediatric ICU and saving children’s lives in an ICU setting.
________________________
Dr. Akira Nishisaki is one of the JMSA Vice Presidents and an attending in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). On November 21, 2022, he gave a very informative talk about the Pediatric ICU. He first explained the concept of the pediatric ICU or PICU. The PICU is the distinct place where a critically ill or injured child can receive comprehensive high-quality care. One-third of children admitted to the PICU at CHOP are in need of respiratory support due to the current spread of illnesses such as RSV and influenza. Despite people’s fears, more than 95% of patients who are admitted to the PICU are eventually discharged as they recover from their acute illnesses.

He then spoke about the Japanese PICU and stated that there are only approximately 30 PICUs in Japan. PICU specialists or intensivists are limited in Japan and often general pediatricians provide care for critically ill children. He hopes that there will be an increase in physicians who are trained in ICU care and better regionalization with safe pediatric medical transfer systems in Japan. Dr. Nishisaki is a leader in simulation exercises that allow teams of medical students and doctors in Japan to connect with ICU doctors in the US to learn about critical pediatric ICU scenarios and how to act and what to do to best treat the patients. He ended the talk by emphasizing that people in the community to help decrease PICU admissions by following simple preventative measures such as child safety in the house (such as making sure children won’t get a hold of small batteries that they can eventually swallow), wearing seat belts and using helmets and to follow routine immunization guidelines such as getting the influenza vaccine or getting the covid vaccines as recommended to prevent serious disease.

Thank you, Dr. Nishisaki for a truly valuable webinar that gave a rare look into the PICUs in the US and also in Japan.
