JMSA has provided Dr. Maki Kano with its first physician grant. Small financial grants will be given to a JMSA member who is seeking funds to start a project that fulfills the goals and objectives of the society. Dr. Maki Kano, a pediatrician and internist, practices with the Beth Israel/Tokio Marine Japanese Medical Practice. One day a week, Dr. Kano serves the pediatric population in the Manhattan JMP office. She had noted that many of the mothers who had recently come from Japan seemed to lack social support and networking with other young, new mothers. She started a mother-child support group with the help of Mrs. Kumiko Seki, a RN with the Japanese Consulate Generals office. The purpose of the group is to provide a forum for networking, support and education amongst Japanese mothers in NYC. The group had its first gathering on 2/23 at the Nikkei Jinkai. The meeting was well attended, with over 15 new mothers and their children. Dr. Kano gave a lecture on the U.S. vaccination schedule and policies and how it differed from the Japanese system. She also provided a lecture on common childhood causes of fever. The meeting gave the mothers who attended an informal opportunity to discuss questions they had about well child care and vaccinations in the U.S. The first mother child gathering was successful with thanks to the JMSA for providing financial support and to the Apple Kids organization for promoting the program. The program is grateful to Nikkei Jinkai for providing space for the meeting. The next mother child is planned for April. A workshop for first time mothers who will be delivering in the U.S. will be offered soon. Vital topics such as breastfeeding practices, new parent expectations, and anticipatory guidance will be offered to mothers-to be.
