Press Release: The memorial marking the grave of internationally acclaimed scientist Dr. Hideyo Noguchi will be restored this fall through a generous contribution made by the Japanese Medical Society of America. The monument, located in the Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, will be cleaned for the first time in eighty years. Hideyo Noguchi died in 1928 after contracting yellow fever, the disease he was researching to develop a vaccine.  

At the time of his death, Dr. Noguchi was working in West Africa for the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Dr. Noguchi’s remains were brought back to New York, and the Institute purchased a lot in the Woodlawn Cemetery for burial. A simple monument of a natural boulder and bronze plaque was selected to memorialize the scientist. Margaret French Cresson, the daughter of sculptor Daniel Chester French was commissioned to create the bronze plaque.

Dr. Hideyo Noguchi was born on November 9, 1876 in Inawashiro, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. He began his career in medicine at the age of twenty moving to the United States to further his studies in 1900. University and many other institutions. In 2004, Noguchi’s portrait was placed on the 1000 note Yen and the house where he was born is a museum. The Japanese Government established the Hideyo Noguchi Africa Prize in 2006 to honor individuals with outstanding achievements in combating infectious disease in Africa.

“The Noguchi Memorial is one of our most visited sites - hundreds of people come to Woodlawn every year to honor the great doctor. We were so pleased when Dr. Shunichi Homma, President of the Japanese Medical Society in America, contacted us about the condition of the memorial. Having the work restored will mean so much to those who admire and respect the contributions Dr. Noguchi made to medicine and society,” said Susan Olsen, Executive Director of the Friends of the Woodlawn Cemetery.

“We are grateful to the Japanese Medical Society of America and to the Friends of Woodlawn for taking the lead in restoring Dr. Noguchi’s memorial,” said Paul Nurse, President of The Rockefeller University. “It is a fitting tribute to Dr. Noguchi’s lasting legacy.”

Krelick Conservation has been selected to do the restoration. The process will involve cleaning and re-patination of the bronze plaque and removing biological growth from the boulder. Restoration of the memorial will take place on Tuesday, October 14th.  After the restoration work is completed, the site will be prepared for an unveiling ceremony scheduled for Saturday, November 15, 2008.

野口英世博士の墓地修復のため米国日本人医師会（JMSA）が資金を寄付

国際的科学者である野口英世博士の墓碑が、この秋、米国日本人医師会からの寛大な寄付によって、修復される運びとなった。ブロンクス区のウッドローン墓地にある墓碑が、80年ぶりにきれいになる。野口博士は1928年、黄熱病ワクチン開発のための研究中に、その黄熱病にかかり亡くなった。

当時、野口博士は西アフリカにあるロックフェラー医学研究所で働いており、死後、博士の亡き骸はニューヨークに運ばれ、同研究所がウッドローン墓地に埋葬のための土地を購入。シンプルな玉石と銅の刻板が記念碑として選ばれた。銅刻板の制作は、彫刻家ダニエル・チェスター・フレンチの娘、マーガレット・フレンチ・クレッソンに依頼された。

野口英世博士は、1876年11月9日、福島県猪苗代に生まれた。20歳で医学の道に進み、さらなる研究のために渡米したのは1900年だ。まずペンシルベニア大学で研究助手となり、後にロックフェラー医学研究所（現ロックフェラー大学）に移籍。何度となくノーベル賞候補となり、イエール大学、東京帝国大学ほか多くの学術機関から名誉学位が授与された。2004年には野口博士の顔が千円札に印刷され、彼の生家は博物館になっている。2006年には日本政府が「野口英世アフリカ賞」を設け、アフリカの伝染病撲滅のために尽力する研究者らを讃えている。

「野口メモリアルは、ウッドローンでも最も来訪者が多い場所の一つで、毎年何百人もの人がこの偉大な博士を讃えようと訪れています。米国日本人医師会会長の本間俊一博士から電話をいただき、野口メモリアルの保存状態を尋ねていただいたときは、大変嬉しく思いました。野口メモリアルの修復は、野口博士が医学界に残した業績を讃え尊敬する者たちにとって、大変意義あることです」と、フレンズ・オブ・ウッドローン・セメタリーのディレクター、スーザン・オルセンさんは言う。

ロックフェラー大学のポール・ナース学長も、「野口メモリアルの修復のためのリーダーシップをとってくれた米国日本人医師会と、フレンズ・オブ・ウッドローン・セメタリーに感謝しています。野口博士が後世に永遠に残してくれた実績にとって、ふさわしい贈り物です」と話している。

清掃、銅刻板の修復、玉石に生えたコケなどの除去作業など、一連の修復作業は、クレリック・コンサーベーションが行うことになっている。10月14日（火）に作業が行われ、作業終了後は、11月15日（土）の除幕式に向けて準備が進められる。
