Written by: Maki Kano, M.D. On April 8, 2004, Dr. Yuichiro Kuwama gave the third JMSA health care lecture at the Nippon Club. The lecture addressed health care screening and was very well attended. The JMSA is grateful to the Japanese Chamber of Commerce, the Nippon Club, and Eisai Corporation for the funding that has made this lecture possible. Dr. Kuwama referred to the United States Special Task Force on Prevention guidelines for health care prevention and screening. Based on the evidence found in the medical literature, he noted that many diagnostic tests such as chest x-rays that are frequently part of the traditional Japanese corporate physicals are not recommend by the USPTF. With respect to primary prevention, counseling patients about smoking prevention is highly recommended as well as counseling patients about the need for smoke detectors and wearing helmets. These recommendations are supported by the literature as significantly decreasing patient morbidity and mortality. The guests were very fortunate to hear a few classical pieces, played by Dr. Kuwama at the end of the lecture. We are learning that Dr. Kuwama is not only a great physician, but a very talented musician. The next JMSA lecture will by presented by Dr. Jean Furuyama in June on the topic of dental health. We hope that you will attend. If you may have any suggestions or comments regarding the healthcare lecture series, please e-mail us.
